Mexican history begins in the state of Guanajuato...

All the important events of Mexican history happened in the Bajio, the central region of the state of Guanajuato. The prehispanic cultures chose this land for the fertility of the plains between the tributaries of the River Lerma. In colonial times, the Sierra de Guanajuato had the best mines in the country and the cities where national independence originated were established along the Camino de la Plata (Silver Route). Today the Bajio, after experiencing the most decisive moments in Mexican history, has continued to be the country's workhorse.
